They Found Us

Although it was still light out, we tried to go to sleep about midnight at the RV cocktail park. Since it was only an overnighter, we decided to stay in the truck and not bother with putting up the tent. We swatted a few mosquitos before settling into our sleeping bags, nothing abnormal. Then moments later, we had to swat a few more mosquitos. Thinking these were just the mosquitos that had followed us in while climbing in the truck, we tried to sleep again. But it kept happening, over and over.
At that point, Jorge conducted a thorough investigation while I hid in my sleeping bag. He discovered that mosquitos were finding their way in through the small cracks in the tailgate and proceeded to scrounge for duct tape to block them. Problem solved, we settled in again. But what was that? Buzz, zzzz, zzzz. There were more.
In his next investigation (this time with a head lamp as the sun had finally gone down, 1:30am) Jorge discovered mosquitos coming in through the liner of the truck bed. There are small holes cut where the hurricane clamps hold the truck shell. We coated socks with deet and tried to plug the holes but nothing could keep them out. Finally, we covered our heads and made an attempt to sleep through any remaining buzzing. That lasted about an hour until 4:30am when the sun came up.
Amazingly, the next day was one of our longest and bumpiest drives, but we took naps in the morning and made our way farther down the Alcan. We had to do a thorough cleaning of the back of the truck, unloading everything and wiping out mosquito guts. From now on we're sticking to high elevation campsites away from water, and we're putting up the tent!
